Cricket’s return to the world’s biggest sporting stage has been officially confirmed, as the International Olympic Committee announced that it will be one of five sports included in the Los Angeles Games in July 2028.
In both the men’s and women’s categories, teams will compete for gold in the T20 format. This marks the sport’s reintroduction to the Olympic program after a gap of more than 120 years, and it strongly suggests that cricket will also be part of the 2032 Games in Brisbane.
The sport’s sole prior appearance at the summer Olympics was in the 1900 Games in Paris when a Great Britain team, predominantly consisting of players from Devon and Somerset, secured gold by defeating a French side primarily composed of British expatriates in a two-nation tournament.
