Srinagar, Feb 20: In a significant breakthrough, Srinagar Police have arrested a notorious criminal involved in an extortion case.
The accused, identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Shah alias “99,” son of Ghulam Qadir Shah, a resident of Aikal Mir Khanyar, has a history of over 30 criminal cases, including theft and extortion, and has been booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) twice.
According to police, the arrest was made following a complaint filed at Police Post Bagyas on January 10, 2025, by Tufail Ahmad Badar, son of Mohammad Akbar, a resident of Badarpora Qoimoh, Kulgam. The complainant stated that while he was at Shireen Bagh Super Speciality Hospital with his patient, he went outside to buy medicines during the night. He was forcibly taken into a vehicle by an unknown individual, who then extorted ₹8,000 from him.
Based on the complaint, an FIR (No. 02/2025) was registered under Section 308(2) BNS at Police Station Safakadal, and an investigation was launched. The police analyzed CCTV footage and other technical evidence, leading to the identification and subsequent arrest of Imtiyaz Ahmad Shah.

Police said that Shah is a habitual offender with a long history of criminal activities. His arrest is expected to bring relief to residents affected by his repeated offenses.
