Awantipora, Dec 27: Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested individuals involved in circulating an explicit video of a woman on social media in Awantipora.

In a statement, a police spokesman said that a written complaint was lodged with Police Awantipora on 26 December 2024 by a local resident, alleging that a video of his sister, containing indecent and sexually explicit content, was being circulated across various social media platforms and WhatsApp groups.

He said in response to the complaint, Police Awantipora registered a case under FIR No. 186/2024, covering relevant provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act and the BNS Act. Following an immediate investigation, authorities confirmed the allegations were accurate, leading to the swift arrest of the individuals involved in distributing the video.

The investigation is ongoing, with the possibility of more arrests in connection with the case, he said

He said in light of this incident, Police Awantipora urges social media users to refrain from uploading or circulating explicit videos, as such actions are punishable under the IT Act.

Offenders could face imprisonment for up to 7 years and a fine of up to 10 lakh rupees. Any individual found violating this advisory will be dealt with according to the law, the spokesman added.
