The deceased, a resident of the Ainoo Aishmuqam area of Anantnag district, was identified as the daughter of Javed Ahmad Tantray. According to family members, the child had consumed raw peas a few days ago, following which she started suffering from stomach-related complications.

As her condition worsened, the family shifted her to SKIMS Soura for treatment. During medical examination, doctors reportedly informed the family that the peas contained worms, which allegedly led to a serious stomach infection.

Despite treatment, the child’s condition continued to deteriorate and she breathed her last at the hospital on Tuesday morning.

The incident has triggered grief and concern in the area, with residents describing it as one of the rarest such cases reported in the Valley. Locals said the tragedy has also raised concerns about food hygiene, storage conditions and the safety of raw vegetables consumed by children.

Health experts have advised parents to remain cautious about what children consume, especially raw or unwashed food items, as children are more vulnerable to infections and food-borne illnesses.

Doctors have urged people to thoroughly wash vegetables and fruits before consumption and avoid giving raw produce to children unless it is properly cleaned and safe.
