Jammu, May 16: A 60-year-old man died while seven others, mostly children, were hospitalised after suspected food poisoning linked to the consumption of a wild vegetable in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, officials said on Saturday.

The incident occurred in Mohra village of Kotranka subdivision, where members of two families reportedly consumed the wild vegetable on Friday afternoon.

According to officials, eight family members developed symptoms of food poisoning later in the evening and were initially taken to the Community Health Centre in Kandi. They were later referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital Rajouri for specialised treatment.

Mohammad Hussain (60) succumbed during treatment at the hospital, officials said.

The remaining seven patients are undergoing treatment, and their condition is being closely monitored.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the poisoning may have been caused by the wild vegetable consumed by the families. However, the exact cause is yet to be ascertained.
