Tehran, May 15: Tehran opened its 163rd metro station today, a sign of resilience and urban progress as the city expands one of the Middle East’s largest transit networks amid wartime challenges.

The newly opened station, named “Takhti,” was inaugurated by Alireza Zakani and is dedicated to Iran’s legendary wrestler Gholamreza Takhti, a revered national icon remembered for his humility, patriotism and contributions to Iranian sports.

According to reports shared by Iranian diplomatic channels on social media, the opening of the new metro station reflects Tehran’s determination to continue infrastructure development and expand public services despite regional tensions and wartime pressures.

The Tehran mayor said the city administration remains committed to strengthening transportation facilities and improving urban mobility for millions of residents. Officials described the expansion of the metro network as part of a broader vision to modernize the Iranian capital and reduce traffic congestion.

Zakani, who has overseen several urban development projects in recent years, was praised in Iranian social media posts for his role in advancing transportation infrastructure during difficult circumstances. The posts highlighted that he has rendered extensive services in the fields of transportation and urban development during wartime.

The Tehran mayor is also known for his background as a veteran of the 1980 Iran-Iraq War. According to details shared online, Zakani served for 62 months on the frontlines and later became a disabled war veteran after sustaining injuries to his leg, arm and neck.

Apart from his political role, Zakani also serves as an Associate Professor of Nuclear Medicine at Tehran University of Medical Sciences and is affiliated with the Iranian Society of Nuclear Medicine.

Iranian authorities have increasingly emphasized the expansion of Tehran’s metro system as a major national achievement. Earlier this year, Zakani announced ambitious plans to further expand the capital’s subway network with dozens of new stations and additional rail lines in the coming years.
