Srinagar, May 3: Kashmir is witnessing a steady rise in lifestyle-related illnesses, with kidney diseases, diabetes, hypertension and cancers emerging as major public health concerns. Doctors attribute this growing burden to changing lifestyles, poor dietary habits, lack of physical activity and increasing tobacco use.

Amid these concerns, noted urologist Dr Saleem Wani has raised alarm over the increasing number of kidney failure and bladder cancer cases in the Valley, linking them directly to uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking.

Speaking exclusively with Asian News Hub, Dr Wani, former Head of Urology at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, said diabetes and hypertension have become the leading causes of kidney failure.

“The number one cause of kidney failure today is diabetes and hypertension. Other problems like kidney stones or structural abnormalities come later,” he said.

Silent but Serious Threat

Dr Wani noted that kidney-related complications often develop silently, and delayed diagnosis can lead to severe and irreversible damage.

Doctors across Kashmir have repeatedly flagged that late diagnosis and irregular treatment are worsening outcomes for patients.

Smoking Linked to Bladder Cancer

The urologist also expressed concern over the rising cases of bladder cancer, identifying smoking as the primary cause.

“The most important cause of bladder cancer is cigarette smoking, and unfortunately, smoking is on the rise. We are seeing more cases now,” he said.

He emphasised that early detection plays a crucial role in improving treatment outcomes.

“Our focus is always on early detection. If diagnosed in time, treatment—including surgery—can be much more effective,” he added.

Lifestyle Changes Key to Prevention

Highlighting preventive measures, Dr Wani stressed the need for lifestyle changes.

He advised people to:

Control blood pressure
Reduce salt intake
Maintain proper blood sugar levels
Limit excessive protein consumption
Stay physically active

He urged patients with diabetes to remain in regular contact with specialists and strictly follow prescribed treatment.

“Our lifestyle has become increasingly sedentary. Lack of physical activity is contributing to diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Regular exercise and walking are essential,” he said.

Don’t Ignore Symptoms

Dr Wani cautioned against self-medication and ignoring warning signs.

“When symptoms appear, people should consult doctors immediately and follow medical advice in letter and spirit, especially regarding diet and medication,” he said.

Growing Health Concern

Health experts say the rise in lifestyle diseases in Kashmir is a serious concern that requires urgent awareness and early intervention.

Dr Wani’s message highlights a crucial point—most of these conditions are preventable, but only if people act in time.
