Srinagar, May 1: Health officals have reported a suspected outbreak of acute viral hepatitis among children in the Reshipora locality of Khimber in Zadibal area of Srinagar, prompting immediate response and surveillance measures.

An official from the District Surveillance Unit (DSU) said the cases were reported in a clustered pattern on April 30, following which health teams rushed to the area for assessment.

“Most of the affected children are showing symptoms like jaundice, fever, vomiting, fatigue and loss of appetite,” the official said.

Water Source Under ScannerPreliminary findings suggest that the outbreak could be linked to the consumption of contaminated spring water, which is widely used by residents in the area.

“Initial assessment points towards a waterborne infection, likely through the faecal-oral route, commonly seen in Hepatitis A and E,” the official added.

Water samples from tap and spring sources have been collected and sent for testing, while blood samples of some patients have been forwarded for laboratory examination. Reports are awaited.

Preventive Measures in Place

Authorities have sealed the suspected spring water source in coordination with the local Masjid Committee to prevent further use. The Jal Shakti Department has also been informed to assess water quality and take necessary action.

Health teams have started active surveillance in the locality to monitor any fresh cases.

“So far, there is no sharp increase in new cases, and the situation is under control,” officials said.Advisory for Residents

Residents have been advised to:

Drink boiled or treated water

Maintain proper hygiene

Avoid using untreated water sources

Officials stressed that continued monitoring and coordination between departments will be crucial to prevent further spread.
