A day after two Srinagar residents were arrested in alleged eve-teasing case, a senior police officer on Monday asked the women facing such harassment and incidents to approach police and that those involved in the act will be brought to book.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DYSP), Mansha Beigh while talking to Asian News Hub (ANH), said that only a few cases related to eve teasing are being reported. “Yesterday’s case has come to the fore through social media and an apt action was taken in this regard. The action against those involved in harassment or eve teasing can be taken only after these cases are reported,” she said.

She further said that particularly after yesterday’s incident, such complaints have started increasing as people have started raising such issues. “We are on it, we along with Traffic and other departments will take initiatives to prevent such acts,” she said.

DySP Beigh also said that women helpline numbers have already been issued in this regard. “If the complainant is not willing to approach police directly at Police Stations, she can contact on helpline numbers so that action against the involved is taken,” she said.

The Police officer further said that parents have primary responsibility to put an end to such act as their teachings to their children would help to reduce such incidents to a large extent, adding that reporting of such cases will help also in bringing down the number of such acts.

“Being a woman police officer, my message to the people is to come forward and report such cases. Facing harassment or eve teasing is not their fault, but those involved in the act should be brought to book,” she said.
