A new earthquake has struck western Afghanistan, marking the third seismic event in the region within a week, following two larger quakes that claimed the lives of over 1,000 people.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported this latest earthquake as having a magnitude of 6.3, with its epicenter near the city of Herat and at a depth of 6.3km.
Tragically, at least one person has been reported dead, and around 100 individuals are receiving medical treatment in the regional hospital, according to the World Health Organization.
Notably, more than 90% of the casualties from the earlier earthquakes were women and children, as indicated by the UN’s children agency, Unicef.
The USGS said the epicenter of this latest tremor 30km northwest of Herat, which is Afghanistan’s third-largest city and located near the Iranian border.
