16 dead after magnitude 6.8 earthquake shakes Ecuador

At least 16 people died after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck southern Ecuador on Saturday afternoon, CNN reported.

The earthquake struck near the southern town of Baláo and was more than 65 km (nearly 41 miles) deep, according to the United States Geological Survey.

An estimated 381 people were injured in the quake, the General Secretariat of Communication of the Presidency of Ecuador tweeted on their official account.

Strong earthquake strikes Japan

A magnitude 6.1 quake struck off Aomori in northern Japan on Tuesday, the national weather agency said, but no tsunami warning was issued. The quake hit at 6:18 pm (0918 GMT) at a depth of 20 kilometres (12 miles), AFP reported citing Japan Meteorological Agency.

Major Japanese media outlets carried no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 6.2.

Ramazan moon sighted in Pakistan, holy month to begin from tomorrow

The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee announced on Wednesday that the Ramazan moon had been sighted and the first of the holy month would fall on Thursday (tomorrow).

The announcement was made by Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad at a press conference in Peshawar, dawn.com reported.

The committee met at Peshawar’s Eidgah. Separate meetings of the zonal and district Ruet-i-Hilal committees were also held at their respective headquarters.

Powerful earthquake felt in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India

A powerful earthquake of Magnitude 6.6 on ritcher scale jolted Fayzabad, Afghanistan on Tuesday evening, National Center for Seismology said.

The tremors has been felt in parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, according to witnesses.

“Earthquake of Magnitude:6.6, Occurred on 21-03-2023, 22:17:27 IST, Lat: 36.09 & Long: 71.35, Depth: 156 Km ,Location: 133km SSE of Fayzabad, Afghanistan,” National Center for Seismology tweeted.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from Tuesday’s quake.
