Srinagar, May 29: The recent sighting of a wild boar outside the premises of Lal Ded (LD) Hospital in Srinagar’s Wazir Bagh area has sparked concern among patients, attendants and hospital staff, highlighting the growing challenge of wildlife entering urban spaces in Kashmir.

The animal was seen roaming around the hospital complex before disappearing on Thursday night.

The incident comes amid increasing reports of wild boar movement across several parts of the Valley, particularly near orchards, agricultural fields and residential localities.

Speaking on the issue, Dr Mohsin Gazi (MVSc), Veterinary Officer, Kashmir Region, told Asian News Hub that the Wildlife Protection Department has been actively working on scientific and practical measures to tackle the growing wild boar menace and reduce human-animal conflict.

“The department is exploring possible interventions to manage the issue effectively while ensuring compliance with legal provisions,” Dr. Gazi said.

He said regular meetings are being held under the chairmanship of the Chief Wildlife Warden, Kashmir, to discuss wildlife-related concerns and formulate management strategies. He added that animal rescue and rehabilitation teams remain operational round the clock to respond to wildlife emergencies across the Valley.

Dr. Gazi emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach involving population management, habitat protection, community participation and preventive measures.

Among the measures suggested are installation of solar-powered electric fencing around vulnerable areas, improved garbage and waste management to prevent animals from entering human habitations, scientific population mapping and deployment of deterrents such as motion-sensor lights, sound systems and camera-trap surveillance.

He also stressed the importance of public awareness regarding wildlife behaviour and conflict mitigation.
