Aajiz was widely respected for his efforts to preserve and revive the traditional Kashmiri Bhand-e-Peathar, a centuries-old folk theatre form. Over the years, he had voiced concerns over the decline of the art, which he attributed to historical political interventions and changing social dynamics.

Known for his deep knowledge of the folk tradition and his commitment to nurturing new talent, Aajiz had worked tirelessly to keep Bhand-e-Peathar alive through workshops, performances, and cultural awareness campaigns.

Cultural activists and fellow artists expressed grief over his demise, acknowledging his pivotal role in promoting and safeguarding Kashmir’s rich heritage.

“His passing is a tremendous loss to the cultural landscape of Kashmir. He dedicated his life to preserving Bhand-e-Peathar and mentoring countless artists,” said a senior member of the NBT told.

Aajiz’s legacy includes not only his leadership in the National Bhand Theatre but also his relentless advocacy for folk arts, emphasizing their importance in maintaining the social and historical narratives of the region.

His contributions have inspired a new generation of performers and enthusiasts committed to keeping the tradition alive despite modern challenges.

The NBT has announced plans to hold a memorial event to honour his life and work, encouraging the public and cultural fraternity to pay tribute to the veteran artist.

Ghulam Mohi ud Din Aajiz is survived by his family and a community of artists who will continue his mission of preserving Kashmir’s folk theatre heritage. (JKNS)
