UK records deadliest day of pandemic

London, Jan 13: The UK has recorded its deadliest day of the pandemic so far, after another 1,564 people were confirmed to have died with coronavirus.

It smashes the previous record of 1,325, recorded last Friday, January 8. Tuesday’s total of 1,243 is now the third highest daily toll, while the first wave record reported on April 21, 2020 was 1,224.

Cases continue to drop slightly, with 47,525 new infections recorded in the last 24 hours, but experts will be deeply concerned that the figure remains so high, with fears that the worst is yet to come for the NHS.

Wednesday’s death toll means that the UK has now passed 100,000 Covid-19 linked deaths by one measure, which adds government tallies in recent days to the number of death certificates which have mentioned the virus since the pandemic began.

The official death toll now stands at 84,767 with 7,421 of those coming in the last seven days while the confirmed number of UK infections stands at 3,211,576.
