A joint drive was launched by the Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Kashmir, Syed Shahnawaz and Superintendent of Police (SP) Traffic City Tariq Ahmad against the auto-rickshaw drivers for not complying with the orders with regard to the installation of digital fare meters.

The Asian News Hub (ANH) spoke to the Superintendent of Police (SP) during the drive, who said that the enforcement drive has been launched with an aim to ensure that the auto rickshaws comply with the orders of installing the fare meters.
It has been observed that most of the auto rickshaws are without fare meters, he said, adding that those who are found violating the norms are being challaned while some of the vehicles are also being seized.

He said that the implementation of installation of meters is priority at present. “We are on it and will ensure that all the auto rickshaw drivers install meters,” he said.

Regional Transport Officer, Kashmir, Syed Shahnawaz told ANH that the rate list has been already issued in 2021. “The economics workout is being done before issuing the rate list and even the inflation load of next two years is also being included,” he said when asked the complaints from auto rickshaw drivers.

He said that until and unless the meters are not issued, the issue of overcharging by the auto rickshaw drivers cannot be addressed.

The people are approaching us through the social media platforms. And it is because of the complaints that the drive has been launched, he said.

Asked about youth involved in stunts, he said the traffic police have been doing well in counseling the involved youth and the joint ventures have and will continue to be launched by RTO and Traffic department to curb such issues.
