A calligraphy artist from Alamgari Bazar Srinagar is working to prepare banners in connection with the ongoing holy month of Muharram-ul-Haram.

Shujat Ali Gazi said, “This way, I contribute to the Muharram preparations.”

I write specifically for Muharram purposes, he said. “I painted my first flag when I was studying in Class 6.”

Gazi is a self-taught artist and his family is associated with the paper machie work. “So, it was easy for me to mix up colours. After all, it is a God-given gift,” he said.

Apart from banner painting, I also write Islamic calligraphy, Shujat said. “I have been with this art for more than 30 years and have learned from the basics to the top—the alphabet, and how to write in calligraphy. I have also taken inspiration from Irani calligraphy.”

Gazi said he sends banners across Kashmir, adding, “Recently, I sent flags and other calligraphy items to Uttar Pradesh.” KNO
