Heavy Rains, Flash Flood Risk in J&K from August 17–19; Met Issues Advisory

Srinagar, Aug 17: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued a weather advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and the potential for flash floods and landslides between August 17 and 19.

According to the forecast, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected across many parts of the Union Territory. Intense to heavy showers are likely over several districts of the Jammu division including Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch, Samba, and Kathua. Similar conditions are predicted in parts of Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, and some areas of the Kashmir division, which may also witness gusty winds and brief intense rainfall.

The weather is expected to ease from August 20 to 22, with generally hot and humid conditions and chances of brief thundershowers at isolated places. However, another spell of rain is expected between August 23 and 25, with moderate showers at many places and heavy rainfall at a few.

The Met department has cautioned the public about the risk of cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, and mudslides in vulnerable areas. Travellers, transporters, tourists, and trekkers have been advised to plan accordingly and avoid water bodies, riverbanks, and unstable structures during this period.

The advisory urges people, especially in hilly and low-lying areas, to remain alert and follow safety guidelines.
