Harshest winter phase ‘Chillai-Kalan’ ends; Srinagar records coldest day of the season

Srinagar, Jan 30: Maximum temperatures dropped further in most parts of Kashmir due to daylong cloud cover even as the 40-day long period of harsh winter cold ‘Chillai Kalan’, that began of 21 December last year, ended in the Valley on Saturday.

Chillai-Kalan is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.

As per Kashmir Weather, an independent weather forecaster, Srinagar city recorded a maximum temperature of 2.0 degrees Celsius – 5.5 degrees below normal – which is the lowest of the season so far.

Qazigund, Pahalgam and Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded high temperatures of 2.1°C, 1.5°C and 1.7°C respectively.

Gulmarg and Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded maximum temperatures of 1.2°C and 3.3°C respectively.

Kashmir Weather has forecasted of severe cold wave conditions for another 24hrs with some respite from February 01 onward.
