Baramulla, Feb 16: In a step towards promoting public health and environmental cleanliness, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has declared Gulmarg and Tangmarg as Tobacco-Free Zones ahead of the much-anticipated Khelo India Winter Games 2025.

This move aligns with the ‘Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan,’ aiming to curb tobacco use and ensure a clean, healthy atmosphere for tourists, athletes, and locals alike.

The decision stems from the well-established harmful effects of tobacco, which is a major risk factor for various non-communicable diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular ailments, and lung disorders. Additionally, tobacco use, particularly spitting, contributes to the spread of infectious diseases such as swine flu, tuberculosis, and pneumonia.

Under the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, smoking in public places is already prohibited. The administration has reinforced this regulation by banning smoking and spitting of tobacco in Gulmarg and Tangmarg, making violations a punishable offense under Section 270 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which addresses public nuisance and health hazards.

To ensure strict implementation, authorities, including the Senior Superintendent of Police, Baramulla, the Chief Executive Officer of the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA), the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Gulmarg, and the Chief Medical Officer, have been directed to enforce the ban effectively.

The move has been welcomed by health experts and environmental activists, who believe it will not only protect visitors from second-hand smoke exposure but also contribute to the cleanliness and sustainability of the renowned tourist destination.

With Gulmarg set to host athletes from across the country for Khelo India 2025, this initiative ensures a healthier and more enjoyable experience for all, reinforcing Jammu and Kashmir’s commitment to public well-being and a drug-free future. (KNS)
