Pahalgam, May 13: The recent terror attack in Pahalgam has badly affected the tourism industry in the area, leaving thousands of people jobless and worried about their future. The famous tourist town now looks empty and silent.

Around 5,000 pony (horse) operators and 600 vehicle owners—along with their families—who depend fully on tourism for their earnings, have lost their source of income.

As per Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Pahalgam in Anantnag district, which was once full of tourists, now feels abandoned. The peaceful and beautiful Baisaran Valley, often called ‘mini Switzerland’ of Kashmir, was shaken on April 22 when a terror attack took 26 lives.

This attack happened just as the tourist season was starting (April to October), a time when many people earn their living through hotels, transport, handicrafts, and local markets. Now, with fewer tourists coming, thousands are facing financial trouble.

Abdul Waheed Wani, President of the Pony Walla Association, said that nearly 5,000 horsemen are struggling to feed their families. “All 13 villages in this area depend on Pahalgam’s tourism. The attackers made a huge mistake. We are citizens of this country. If tourists stop visiting, it means the attackers win,” he said.

He requested people across India to continue visiting Kashmir. “The aim of those who attacked innocent people in Baisaran was to disturb peace. But if tourists keep coming, we can defeat their purpose. The income of drivers, photographers, hotel workers, and pony wallas has all stopped,” he added.

Gulzar Ahmad, President of the Sumo Stand Pahalgam, said over 600 drivers have lost their work. “These drivers support around 60,000 people in total. Without tourists, there is no work and no money. Everyone is in pain,” he said.

He added that Pahalgam has always been peaceful, and maybe that peace made some people unhappy.

“Pahalgam was like a shining star. But now, everything feels dark. The government must take steps to bring tourism back to the Kashmir Valley,” he said.
