New Delhi, Jun 27: The Delhi Prisons Department has clarified that separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah, currently lodged in Tihar Jail, is in stable health despite rumours on social media suggesting otherwise.
In an official statement, the department said Shah has been receiving regular medical care and is in a stable condition. On June 26, 2025, he was taken to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for an outpatient consultation after complaining of lower urinary tract symptoms. He was subsequently admitted for further tests and evaluation. All medical reports have been found normal, and appropriate treatment is ongoing at the hospital.
The clarification came amid growing concern on social media over Shah’s well-being. His daughter, Sehar Shabir Shah, expressed deep anxiety on X (formerly Twitter), “My father, Shabir Shah, has spent 38 years in prison. No conviction. No justice. Today, he is gravely ill. He has been advised multiple surgeries. Yet there is no proper care, no access to medical records, and not even a single phone call in two years which is a right every prisoner is entitled to.”
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also voiced concern, stating, “Request @HMOIndia to urgently consider the heartfelt appeal of Seher Shabir whose father Shabir Shah is battling a life-threatening illness. In this critical moment we urge GOI to take a humanitarian view by ensuring he receives proper medical care. This may be the family’s last chance to ease his suffering. Please let compassion guide the response.”
Meanwhile, Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq demanded transparency, posting, “A heartbreaking and courageous appeal from a daughter. This is not politics — this is a plea for dignity, humanity, and the most basic rights.”
