Srinagar, Mar 10: A youth from the Soiteng area of Srinagar died at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital in Srinagar on Saturday evening. His family claimed that he died due to medical negligence. However, hospital authorities refuted the claims, stating that SMHS Hospital and other associated hospitals remain deeply committed to patient care and providing the best possible healthcare services to our patients.

In a statement issued to Asian News Hub, a spokesman of SMHS hospital said that a 20-year-old male was admitted to a private hospital in Srinagar and was referred in critical condition to SMHS Hospital yesterday midnight (03/09/2024) at 12:30 a.m. Upon arrival, he was diagnosed with an acute  abdomen with sepsis and septic shock. He was resuscitated, and  his condition was explained to the family attendants.

He said, a high-risk consent for urgent surgery was obtained, and he was immediately shifted to the operating theatre. He underwent surgery at 3:30 a.m. during the night. He had fecal peritonitis secondary to ileal perforation. Postoperatively, he was placed on a ventilator and was extubated during the  day. His condition suddenly worsened around 6:00 p.m.

An ICU  consultation was sought, and while intubation was being attempted, the patient succumbed. Fecal peritonitis with septic shock carries a  high mortality rate (50-90%) worldwide. Considering the patient’s late reporting to the hospital due to prolonged shock and the fecal septicemia evident from his clinical picture, despite immediate resuscitation and timely surgery, the patient could not overcome irreversible shock, he said.
