Srinagar, Aug 30: The Jammu region has witnessed one of its deadliest fortnights in recent years, with more than 100 people losing their lives to cloudbursts, landslides, and flash floods triggered by incessant rains.
According to officials, the disasters have struck multiple districts including Kishtwar, Kathua, Katra, Reasi and Ramban over the past 15 days. The worst-hit remains Kishtwar, where 64 people died in a single incident, while a landslide in Katra claimed 35 lives just three days ago.
On Saturday, fresh tragedies added to the toll as seven members of a family died when a massive landslide buried their home in Reasi’s Mahore tehsil. In Ramban’s Rajgarh tehsil, a cloudburst claimed four lives, while one person remains missing.

Authorities said rescue operations are underway in affected areas, with teams of police, SDRF, and local administration pressed into service.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union MoS Dr. Jitendra Singh, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep grief and assured all possible assistance to the victims’ families.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued yellow and orange alerts for the region till September 2, warning of more heavy rainfall, cloudbursts, and landslides. Residents in hilly and flood-prone areas have been advised to stay alert and avoid vulnerable zones. (KNO)
