In a bid to prevent the rising suicide incidents in Srinagar, the Jammu and Kashmir police have started a process to identify the hotspots where a number of such incidents have been reported in the recent past while the police said to have prevented four such incidents in the past month.

In an exclusive interaction with Asian News Hub (ANH), Superintendent of Police (SP) East, Shree Raam R said that the hotspots where suicide incidents have taken place are being identified at present.

“We have noticed that a number of suicides in our area was high. These happen from specific bridges, which include Amira Kadal, Budshah bridge, and Foot bridge. The number of suicide incidents at these spots are high as per the data,” he said.

He added that the deployment of river police usually remains from Peerzoo side and “we have shifted to these strategic points. We have been modifying the patrolling pattern to ensure that the suicides are prevented rather than just recovering bodies.”

“We are looking at previous history also, and we are also presently monitoring, and accordingly, further boats will be placed at the other hotspots in Srinagar,” he said.

“Over the time, we have also briefed the personnel there to look out for people who may come for suicides. In the past month, we have managed to reduce the number of suicides and we have prevented four people from committing suicide in the last one month,” he said.

After being prevented from committing suicide, he said that they are being taken to police station for counselling where they are being counselled properly and find out if there is any cause for suicide. Whatever legal backing is required, we are doing that by trying to solve their issues, he said.

“There is no institutional mechanism. “We are requesting physical structures along the bridge to prevent suicide.” Moreover, we are trying to maintain a mechanism where we can formally give them counselling through mental institutes,” he said.
