Baramulla, May 09 : The education department has miserably failed to make a school building functional here in Tilagam area of Nehalpora, Pattan, despite elapsing six years since its completion.

The building for Government Primary School in Tilagam was constructed at the cost of Rs 20 lakhs, six years ago but is yet to be made functional while as the building has been termed as “unsafe” for children.

The residents told that the three room building is “unsafe” as the construction material used was not as per the construction regulations, since the building has partially damaged. Cracks on walls, semi-damaged roof and damaged floor could be seen on the school building, they said, blaming authorities for not utilizing the government funds in a proper manner.

They also alleged the contractor for his negligence and mismanagement for government funds for the construction. One of the residents, Mohammed Aslam told that building was constructed years before but due to unknown reasons the school was not shifted from old location.

“The one story building has got cracks, fractures without being made functional, since the land where school is built is unsafe for construction,” Aslam told, adding that the contractor has deliberately constructed the building in his own land on the cliff of a hillock besides a water channel.

“The building is in ruins, school does not even have a pathway and fencing area. The land owner was the contractor and now he has put fodder in the school Building.” he told.

The residents said that they approached to the concerned officials several times but nothing was done in this regard. Chief Education Officer (CEO) Baramulla, Ghulam Mohammed Lone told that they have discussed the matter with ZEO Nehalpora and concerned Engineering wing, hopefully the matter would be resolved soon.(KNO)
