241 Dead, 1 Survivor as Air India Flight Crashes After Takeoff from Ahmedabad

New Delhi, Jun 13: In one of the worst air tragedies in India, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, killing 241 people on board. Only one person has survived.

The flight, AI-171, was going from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick. It had 230 passengers, 10 cabin crew members and two pilots – a total of 242 people. The plane crashed into a residential area near BJ Medical College soon after takeoff, causing a huge fire and panic in the area.

The only survivor is a British citizen of Indian origin, who was sitting in seat number 11A. He is currently being treated in a hospital.

The flight had taken off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 PM on Thursday, but just a few minutes later, it lost control and crashed.

Air India released a statement on social media platform X, confirming the accident. The statement said:

“Flight AI171, flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on 12 June 2025, met with an accident. The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft took off at 1:38 PM with 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Sadly, 241 people have lost their lives. One survivor is being treated in hospital.”

UPDATE: Air India confirms that flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on 12 June 2025, was involved in an accident.

The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew.

Air India also shared the nationality of the passengers:

  • 169 were Indian
  • 53 British
  • 7 Portuguese
  • 1 Canadian

The airline expressed deep sorrow and offered condolences to the families of the victims. It said their team is in Ahmedabad to help the families and affected people. Air India also said it will fully support the investigation into the crash.
