Srinagar, Dec 8: A series of fire incidents across Kashmir on Monday damaged timber units, residential houses and a mosque, though no loss of life was reported, officials said.
In Srinagar’s Munawarabad, several timber units were gutted after a fire broke out late Sunday night, with thick smoke and flames seen rising from the cluster of adjoining units where large quantities of wood were stored. A double-storeyed commercial building was also damaged, affecting six to seven shops on its first floor. Fire and Emergency Services personnel, assisted by police and locals, battled the blaze for a prolonged period before bringing it under control. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
In Shopian’s Memander village, at least two residential houses and a cow shed were destroyed after a fire erupted in a residential cluster on Monday. Fire and Emergency Services teams, supported by an army unit, J&K Police and locals, contained the blaze before it could spread further in the densely populated area. Officials said the structures involved were largely made of combustible material, increasing the intensity of the fire. No casualties were reported.
