Hyderabad, May 18: At least 17 people, including eight children and five women, died in a tragic fire that broke out early this morning in a building near Hyderabad’s iconic Charminar. Several others were injured in the incident.

The cause of the fire is still not confirmed, but officials suspect that a short circuit might have triggered the blaze.

A fire department official said they received a call around 6:30 am and immediately rushed to the location. Eleven fire engines were used to control the fire, and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident. In a post shared by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on X, he said, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy in Hyderabad, Telangana. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

The PMO also announced financial assistance: Rs 2 lakh will be given to the families of each deceased person from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), and Rs 50,000 will be provided to those who were injured.

The local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
