Seasonal precipitation recorded between October 1 and December 25 has remained 44 per cent below normal in the Kashmir Division, categorised as deficit, while the Jammu Division recorded a 9 per cent shortfall, which falls under the normal range, according to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar.
The weather department said that although Kashmir is facing a significant rainfall and snowfall deficit this season, a brief spell of wet weather is expected around the New Year, bringing some relief.
As per the forecast, light snowfall is likely over higher reaches, while light rain may occur in the plains at scattered to many places across Jammu and Kashmir during December 31 and January 1. Weather conditions are expected to improve thereafter.

The Meteorological Centre has advised travellers and transporters to strictly adhere to traffic and administrative advisories, particularly while moving through higher altitude and vulnerable stretches. It also warned that moderate to dense fog is likely over isolated plains of the Jammu Division during the next three days, which may impact visibility and road traffic.
