Srinagar, Nov 05: Zohran Mamdani has scripted history by winning the New York City mayoral election, becoming the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century and the first Muslim and South Asian to hold the post. The 34-year-old secured around 50.3 percent votes, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, who polled 41.6 percent, while Republican Curtis Sliwa managed just over 7 percent, as per projections from CBS News, BBC, and the Associated Press.

A Democratic Socialist and former state assemblymember, Mamdani drew wide support from young, immigrant, and progressive voters. His campaign focused on key issues such as affordable housing, rent control, and welfare schemes funded by higher taxes on large corporations and wealthy individuals.

Mamdani’s message of equality and social justice found strong backing at the grassroots level, marking a major shift in the city’s political tone and highlighting the growing strength of progressive politics in New York.

At 34, Mamdani becomes the youngest mayor since John Purroy Mitchel, who took office in 1914, and the second-youngest in city history after Hugh J. Grant, who became mayor at 30 in 1889. His win reflects a generational change in leadership and a rising voice of young and diverse communities in the city’s decision-making.

After his surprise victory in the Democratic primary earlier this year, Mamdani’s win is being seen as a milestone in American urban politics. Observers believe his administration will focus on affordable housing, fair wages, climate action, and inclusive governance.

Mamdani will take office on January 1, 2026, which his supporters describe as the beginning of a new and hopeful chapter for New York City. (KNS)
