A devastating fire broke out during the intervening night of January 10–11 in Kandi Karnah, area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, resulting in the complete destruction of three residential houses and a cowshed, besides claiming the life of an elderly man.
Officials said the houses belonging to Khalid Ahmad Qurashi, son of Abdul Majeed Qurashi; Danish Ahmad Qurashi, son of Abdul Qayoom Qurashi; and Farooq Ahmad Qurashi, son of Abdul Qayoom Qurashi were completely gutted in the blaze. A cowshed owned by Danish Ahmad Qurashi was also destroyed, leading to the death of four cattle.
During the incident, Abdul Majeed Qurashi, son of Abdul Aziz, aged about 80 years, reportedly fell unconscious after witnessing the complete damage to his son’s house. He was immediately shifted to SDH Tangdar, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Sources said the elderly man suffered a cardiac arrest, allegedly due to shock caused by the incident.
The fire was brought under control by Fire Tender Tangdar with the assistance of police, army personnel, and local residents.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire broke out due to an electric short circuit.
Meanwhile, authorities have initiated an assessment of the losses, while the incident has plunged the area into grief.
