COVID19: China counts highest spike of new cases in months

Beijing, July 30 (ANH) : Mainland China reported 101 new COVID19 cases on Wednesday, the highest in over 3½ months, the National Health Commission said, as some other Asia nations also reported an uptick in cases.

Most local infections on mainland China were in the far western region of Xinjiang, which had a spike of 89 cases. About half the cases were identified as asymptomatic infections, the commission said.

In the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, six Covid-19 patients were among the first group to be discharged on Tuesday afternoon after testing negative to coronavirus twice since the new outbreak started in mid-July, according to local health authorities.

Xinjiang has designated hospitals for COVID19 patients, runs mass testing supported by medical teams from 10 other Chinese provinces and has stopped operating some public transport.

The northeastern province of Liaoning recorded eight new local cases while Beijing reported a case linked to a patient who came from the port city of Dalian, in Liaoning.

At least nine Chinese cities have reported COVID19 cases linked to Dalian after a new cluster emerged there within the past week.A 10-day beer festival which was set to be held in Dalian in August was called off to prevent further outbreaks, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Tuesday.

Last year, the event attracted 400,000 visitors who bought 800 tonnes of beer, according to the organiser.

The new cases brought the total number of infections in China to 84,060, with 4,634 deaths.(ANH)
