Chennai, May 10: Actor-turned-politician Vijay on Sunday took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a historic political shift in the state with the rise of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to power.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at Chennai’s Nehru Stadium in the presence of senior political leaders, party workers and supporters.

With Vijay assuming office, Tamil Nadu witnesses the end of the decades-long political dominance of the DMK and AIADMK blocs. He becomes the first Chief Minister since 1967 to emerge outside the two major Dravidian parties that have shaped the state’s politics for nearly six decades.
Vijay, who made his electoral debut in the 2026 Assembly elections, delivered a remarkable performance as TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly. The party secured 108 seats but fell short of the majority mark, leading to nearly a week of political uncertainty and intense backroom negotiations.
The stalemate ended after Vijay secured support from multiple parties, helping TVK comfortably cross the majority threshold.
Following the submission of letters of support, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar formally invited Vijay to form the government and asked him to prove his majority on the floor of the House by May 13.
