Moscow, Apr 26: Russia is working on an experimental anti-ageing vaccine designed to slow the body’s ageing process and improve healthy life expectancy, officials have said.

According to Russian authorities, the treatment is being developed as a gene therapy drug that targets the RAGE receptor, which scientists believe is linked to age-related cellular damage.

Russian Deputy Science and Higher Education Minister Denis Sekirinsky said blocking the receptor could help slow cell ageing and prolong youthful function.

“The activation of this receptor is associated with the ageing of cells. Blocking it may help extend their healthy life,” he said during a longevity conference in Saransk, according to state-run TASS news agency.

Officials said the project aims to create the world’s first gene therapy specifically focused on slowing ageing through receptor blockage.

The treatment is being developed by the Institute of Ageing Biology and Medicine as part of Russia’s larger biotechnology and healthcare research programme.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova had earlier announced that Russia expects production of an anti-ageing drug to begin between 2028 and 2030.

The project falls under the New Technologies for Health Preservation National Programme launched in 2025 under President Vladimir Putin.

Reports said the programme has a budget of over 2 trillion rubles (around $26.4 billion).
