A strong Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir from January 22, with peak intensity expected between January 22 night and January 23, raising the chances of widespread snowfall, including in plains, Kashmir Weather said.

According to forecast insights, the weather system will start impacting higher reaches from January 22 morning or afternoon. By 22 night, most parts of J&K are likely to come under rain and snow.

Faizan Arif of Kashmir Weather said weather conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for a significant winter spell, as temperatures will remain low and precipitation is expected to be moderate to heavy, especially during the night of January 22. This combination increases the probability of snowfall even in plains.

The main impact of the system is expected from January 22 night till January 23 afternoon or evening.

Due to strong cold air support, snowfall is expected to be dry in nature, which usually leads to higher accumulation compared to wet snow and can accumulate quickly even with moderate precipitation.

Faizan said areas in Doda, Poonch, Kishtwar and Ramban are likely to receive good snowfall. Plains of the Jammu region may experience moderate rain, with heavy spells possible. Areas near the Pir Panjal range are expected to be the most affected.

A cold air mass moving from the west is expected to cause a sharp fall in temperatures, especially on the night of January 23. Calm winds after precipitation may further enhance cooling, leading to very cold nights, particularly if fresh snow covers the ground.

Meanwhile, authorities have advised people to take precautions as roads may turn extremely slippery due to snow and freezing conditions. Landslides and shooting stones are likely along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, especially in the Ramban sector.

People in higher reaches have been advised to clear snow from rooftops to avoid damage. Flight and train disruptions are also possible due to bad weather, the advisory added.
