Police on Sunday handed over a man hailing from Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir to his family after medical documents confirmed that he was suffering from mental illness. The man had been detained for allegedly attempting to offer namaz inside the Ram Mandir complex.
Officials said the individual, identified as Ahmed Sheikh, a resident of Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir, was detained on January 10 after security personnel noticed him allegedly preparing to offer prayers within the temple premises.
Superintendent of Police (City) Chakrapani Tripathi said Sheikh’s family reached Ayodhya on Saturday evening and informed the police about his mental health condition. “The family produced medical records in support of their claim, following which he was handed over to them,” he said.
