A one-month-old infant died at Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Uri on Sunday, triggering allegations of medical negligence by the bereaved family, a charge strongly denied by hospital authorities.

The deceased infant, identified as Asger Ali, son of Mehboob Mughal of Bandi Uri, was brought to SDH Uri in a critical condition earlier in the day.

A family relative, Sajid Ahmad, alleged that the doctors failed to conduct a proper examination and instead advised the family to seek treatment at a private facility, causing a crucial delay that allegedly led to the infant’s death. “Precious time was wasted. The child was neither thoroughly examined nor given timely treatment,” the family alleged.

However, BMO Uri Balvinder Singh rejected the allegations, stating that the infant was attended to as per medical protocol. “The child was brought in an extremely critical condition. Our doctors examined the infant and immediately referred him to Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla for advanced care,” he said.

The BMO further added that instead of proceeding to the referred government facility, the family opted to visit a private paediatrician.

Meanwhile, hospital authorities said that an inquiry committee has been constituted to ascertain the facts and examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. (GNS)
