Srinagar, Dec 5: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Molvi Umar Farooq on Friday questioned the administration over the delay in releasing the findings of the investigation into the “disturbing” rotten meat scandal that surfaced earlier this year.
Delivering his sermon at Srinagar’s Jama Masjid, Mirwaiz said the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) had seized tonnes of rotten, unlabelled and potentially unlawful meat being openly sold across the Valley — an incident that “shook public trust” and exposed severe gaps in food safety regulation.
He said authorities had promised a thorough probe to identify and punish those involved, but “more than four months have passed, and nothing has been made public.”
Mirwaiz demanded the administration clarify what the test results revealed, whether the culprits have been booked, and if their businesses have been shut down. “People have the right to know whether such meat has completely been removed from the markets,” he said.
Calling for transparency, Mirwaiz urged officials to release the investigation findings and detail what corrective measures have been taken to restore confidence in food safety monitoring.
“Accountability requires public disclosure. The administration must make the facts known so that people are reassured and faith in regulatory systems is restored,” he said. (ANH)
