Ganderbal, Sept 24: Police on Wednesday confirmed that the death of 22-year-old Ajaz Ahmed Rather from Kangan, earlier thought to be a drowning case, was actually a planned murder by his own friends.
SSP Ganderbal, Muhammad Khalil Poswal, told reporters that Ajaz was strangled with a wire before his body was thrown into the Power Canal. “The two accused, identified as Niyazul Haq and Moieen, had bought the wire, which is clearly seen in CCTV footage. They strangled Ajaz and later dumped his body in the canal,” he said.
The wire has been recovered, and strangulation marks were found on the victim’s neck. Police said forensic tests will be used to strengthen the case.

Ajaz’s body was retrieved after a 12-hour operation by SDRF and police teams. The incident has left locals in shock, with many gathering at the canal during the search.
Calling the case disturbing, SSP Poswal appealed to parents and society to guide the younger generation. “It is unfortunate that boys have gone to such an extent. We request parents to keep watch over their children’s behaviour,” he said.
Police have registered a case of murder and both accused are in custody. Investigations are underway. (KNT)
