Srinagar, Sept 17: Prof. Abdul Ghani Bhat, noted academic and former separatist leader, passed away on Wednesday after a brief illness. He was 89 and a resident of Botingoo, Sopore.
Born in 1935, Prof. Bhat co-founded the Muslim United Front (MUF) in 1986 and later served as chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), an amalgam of separatist groups formed in 1993.

He also headed the Muslim Conference, Jammu and Kashmir (MCJK), which was subsequently banned by the Government of India.
Before entering politics, he taught Persian for 22 years and was a noted academician. His political journey was marked by arrest, activism, and leadership in Kashmir’s separatist movement.
