Srinagar, Sept 15: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday extended greetings on the International Day of Democracy, urging collective efforts to uphold democratic values in the region.
“Together, let us strengthen our democratic spirit and work for a J&K where every citizen’s voice is heard and respected,” Omar said in his message on social media.

His remarks come at a time when questions are being raised over the functioning of democratic institutions in J&K. The recent detention of newly elected MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA) has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups, who say such measures undermine the essence of democracy.
