Srinagar, Sept 08: Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah has strongly criticised the detention of Jammu and Kashmir AAP chief and MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), calling the move “unjustifiable” and a misuse of law.
In a statement shared on X, Ruhullah said that if an elected representative had erred, accountability should come through due process of law, not through preventive detention. “That is how accountability works in a democracy,” he noted.
He argued that the PSA, meant for exceptional cases involving grave security threats, has been repeatedly misused in Jammu and Kashmir to detain individuals on “vague and arbitrary grounds.” According to him, this practice has turned the law into a tool to silence voices, undermining public trust in institutions.
While condemning the use of abusive language by Malik, Ruhullah stressed that the government’s response was disproportionate. “This is not justice; it is repression,” he said.
