Srinagar, Jun 26: As the Islamic New Year begins with the sighting of the Muharram moon on Thursday evening, Jammu and Kashmir witnesses the onset of a deeply spiritual and emotional period, especially in Shia-dominated areas of the Valley.

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, marks not only the start of the Islamic New Year but also a solemn period of mourning and reflection for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala.

Across various parts of central and north Kashmir—including Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, and other districts—streets and localities are being adorned with black flags and banners, symbolizing grief, resistance, and reverence.

Preparations are in full swing. Local youth and volunteers are setting up Sabeels (refreshment stalls), decorating Imam Bargahs, and managing logistics for religious processions.

“Muharram is not just about mourning—it’s about standing for truth and justice. Imam Hussain’s sacrifice inspires our path,” said Kifayat, a mourner from Bemina area of Srinagar.

Religious scholars are delivering special sermons highlighting the values of sacrifice, resistance, justice, and unity—principles embodied by Imam Hussain (AS). Large congregations are expected in areas like Hassanabad, Bemina, Rainawari, and Mirgund Pattan, where traditional mourning processions are held during the first ten days of Muharram.

“This month brings tears to our eyes but strengthens our resolve,” said Tahir, a youth from Budgam. “We teach our children the meaning of bravery and truth through the legacy of Karbala.”

Meanwhile, district administrations are closely coordinating with religious bodies to ensure peaceful observance. Authorities have reviewed arrangements related to traffic diversions, medical assistance, and sanitation for the upcoming processions.

The Islamic New Year serves as a time for both solemn remembrance and spiritual renewal, with Muharram’s message echoing strongly across the Valley. (KNO)
