Karnah, May 13: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said that the people living near the border want the ceasefire between India and Pakistan to continue. He added that this wish is not coming from TV studios, but from the hearts of those who face the dangers daily.

During his visit to shelling-affected Karnah, CM Omar told reporters that local people have suffered damage to property, but thankfully, there has been no loss of life. He said the administration is checking the losses and compensation will be given soon. “The damage assessment will be completed today or tomorrow. Whatever help is needed, we will provide it,” he said.

Omar said that community bunkers were made earlier, but haven’t been used in recent times. “No new bunkers have been built in years. People now want personal bunkers. The government already has a policy, and we will prepare a new scheme for those living near the border and LoC,” he said.

He also said the J&K government will talk to the central government about this issue.

Omar strongly supported the continuation of the ceasefire. “It’s only a few TV anchors sitting in Noida or Mumbai who don’t want peace. But the people who actually live at the border want the ceasefire to continue,” he said.

He explained that under current rules of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), compensation is not given for damaged shops. “For that, we will need a special package. Not just Karnah, places like Uri, Rajouri, and Poonch also need help,” he added.

The Chief Minister assured that the government will give full support to all those affected by the shelling. “Today in Tangdhar, I saw burnt homes and vehicles due to heavy shelling. It was painful. We stand with these families in their tough time and will help them rebuild,” said a post by the Chief Minister’s Office on X.

Omar also visited Tangdhar Sub-District Hospital and praised the doctors and staff. “They are doing their duty bravely, saving lives without thinking about their own safety,” he said.

He assured that hospitals near the border will be improved and fully equipped to deal with emergencies in the future.

He also checked the condition of community bunkers in Tangdhar and said, “We will make more such safe spaces to protect our people living in border areas.”
