Mirwaiz Welcomes Supreme Court’s Interim Relief on Waqf Act, Calls for Revocation of “Biased” Amendments

Srinagar, April 17: Welcoming the Supreme Court’s interim order on the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Act, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the move offers a glimmer of hope to the Muslim community, which has been widely protesting the recent changes in the law.

In a post on X, the Mirwaiz appreciated the Supreme Court for raising “tough questions” with the central government regarding the constitutional validity of the amendments. He hailed the apex court’s decision to halt the addition of new members to Waqf Boards and to preserve the status of ‘Waqf-by-user’ properties as a “welcome step.”

“It gives hope to Muslims who look up to the Supreme Court as their last recourse for relief and justice,” he said.

Mirwaiz strongly criticized the Waqf (Amendment) Act, calling it “biased and excessive,” and urged the top court to fully revoke the law, which he said runs counter to the interests and rights of the Muslim community.

The Supreme Court’s interim relief, announced earlier today, came in response to over 70 petitions and growing nationwide protests against the controversial amendments. The case is scheduled for further hearings in early May.
