New Delhi, Mar 28: Following Friday’s strong earthquake that shook the country, the head of Myanmar’s military administration reported that 730 people were injured and 144 people died. Pictures and videos from two severely damaged cities revealed a great deal of destruction. The tremors also affected neighboring Thailand, where a high-rise under construction collapsed in the Thai capital, killing at least eight people. The second-largest city in Myanmar, Mandalay, was the epicentre of the 7.7-mag earthquake that occurred at lunchtime. A powerful 6.4-mag aftershock followed.

According to news agency AP, the Myanmar government said blood was in high demand in the hardest-hit areas. Images of buckled and cracked roads in Mandalay and damaged highways as well as the collapse of a bridge and dam raised further concerns about how rescuers would even reach some areas in a country already enduring a widespread humanitarian crisis.

#UPDATE At least 144 people have been killed in Myanmar by the massive earthquake that hit on Friday, the country's junta chief said, inviting "any country, any organisation" to help with relief ➡️ https://t.co/tNlkIX0Ray pic.twitter.com/nQLzfAI4g9
