In a shocking incident from Bihar’s Vaishali district, a 24-year-old woman was arrested for perpetrating an acid attack on a man. The victim suffered severe burn injuries to his face after the woman, driven by his refusal to marry her, launched the corrosive assault, media reports said.

The police reported the event on a Tuesday, noting that they were also in pursuit of another unidentified accomplice involved in the attack.

Vaishali SP Ravi Ranjan Kumar says “As per the statement of the victim, he received a call around 2 am from the woman, who wished to meet him. The incident took place as he was about to leave after meeting the woman. An unidentified man attacked him with acid and ran away. It is being said that the woman was also involved in this. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway”.

During her interrogation, the woman confessed that Dharmendra did not want to marry her. His family fixed his marriage to another woman, following which she decided to deform his face, the SP said.

In another case, two brothers received life sentences for an acid attack on a girl three years prior, with the court imposing a fine of Rs. 3,20,000 to be paid to the survivor’s family. Additionally, a 17-year-old girl was grievously injured in an acid attack by her neighbour following his failed attempt to molest her, an act that also involved holding her mother at gunpoint.

These incidents underscore the severity of acid attacks as a form of violence in India, where perpetrators often target victims’ faces, causing not only physical harm but also psychological trauma and social stigma. The Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 326A mandates a minimum of 10 years imprisonment, extendable to life, along with a fine for such offences. The fine is intended to cover the medical expenses of the victim’s treatment, acknowledging the long-term impact of these heinous crimes.
