The incident came to light after the police in Anandpur received a tip-off about an illegal transaction by Rupali, a resident of Nonadanga’s Rail colony.
She was called for questioning by the police and could not provide satisfactory explanations leading to her arrest on Monday morning. Eventually, she confessed to the crime, which also led to the arrest of two accomplices, Rupa Das and Swapna Sardar, India Today reported.
The case was registered following a complaint from Rupali’s neighbour. The accused has been charged under sections 317 (abandoning a child), 370 (buying or disposing of a person), 372 (selling a minor), and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of Children) Act.
After further investigation, Kalyani Guha from Midnapur was implicated as the recipient of the trafficked child. Guha, who had been married for 15 years and childless, was arrested by officials from the Parnarsree police station. The baby girl was safely rescued from Guha’s possession and will be handed over to the childcare unit for appropriate care and protection.
This is the second such incident of child trafficking in West Bengal in a span of 7 days. A couple in North 24 Paraganas district was found to have sold their 8-month-old son to buy an iPhone to satiate their desire of making reels and fancy places.
