After the government banned the sale of gold ornaments hallmarked without six-digit alphanumeric HUID—unique identification number, the jeweller association in Srinagar on Saturday said that there is no need to panic as there will be no effect on the gold already available with the people.

Bashir Ahmad Rather, President, All Kashmir Gold Dealers and Workers Association, while talking to Asian News Hub (ANH), said that the old gold (hallmarked without six-digit alphanumeric HUID—unique identification number) is still valid and has same value. “There is no need to panic over the issue. The gold ornaments with or without six-digit alphanumeric HUID—unique identification number are same. There is no difference at all,” he said.

He added that the government has ordered ban on the sale of gold ornaments hallmarked without six-digit alphanumeric HUID—unique identification number from April 01, but the jewellers have already implemented this order a year ago.

“It is an appreciable move and those involved in selling the gold without six-digit alphanumeric HUID—unique identification number should be arrested,” he said, adding that Rs 57 are being spent on HUID number per piece, which is being charged from customers.

However, he appealed the government to resolve their issue with regard to the hallmarking and HUID as well.

Moreover, he further said that the jeweller are entitled to get all the details from customer, who is buying gold worth more than Rs 2 lakh.
