Srinagar, April 27 (ANH): The government has issued an advisory, asking the farmers not to cultivate paddy crops in wake of the low discharge of water from nearby nallahs and admitted that the water scarcity is likely to affect Kashmir parts in the mid of summer season due to the deficit rainfall and early melting of snow.

As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Executive Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) division Sopore has appealed to the farmers not to cultivate paddy crops this year.

In the advisory, a copy of which lies with KNO, the Executive Engineer has said that in view of less snowfall this year and early melting of snow due to soaring temperature, there is possibility of water scarcity in the summer season and thus the farmers should not cultivate paddy crops this year.

Talking to KNO, Chief Engineer, I&FC, Er. Naresh Kumar, said that the advisory has been issued only in Sopore division. “As the deficit rainfall has resulted in low discharge from nallahs in Sopore and being a tail end area, the farming will get affected and thus this particular advisory has been issued,” he said.

Kumar further said that definitely, there is a possibility that Kashmir would face water scarcity in June this year due to the deficient rainfall. However, he said that the department is ready to tackle any situation. “If any area would face water scarcity, the department will come up with timely advisory to provide assistance to the farmers,” he said.
